Had a problem with my anti-virus program, and got a few very nasty viruses. I'm overdue for a clean re-install, and hard-drive wipe. So I'll be down for a little while.

What's your status now SI? It gets a little lonely without your expertise... I mean presence in the forum.

I had AVG free, and a friend recommended Avast. So I downloaded it, and as far as system resources it, my system seemed to run faster with Avast. But before a month was over I had to register it, but it wouldn't let me. A day after the month trial ended I was bombarded with viruses, and at one point had no control over my computer. I've un-installed Avast, and reinstalled it. Then did a boot time scan, and it found 10 viruses. I have control now, but there still something in here affecting the network connection. I have a hard time posting to forums, program updates, and email. To make matters worse, I'm moving on the 1st, and my windows vista disk, and key, is already in storage. So the clean install will have to wait a few more days.
I wouldn't feel bad at all if somebody was to shoot those little bastards, who create these viruses, in the head. Pure trash.

Those are some pretty nasty viruses for avast not to catch all of them (although 10 is quite a few O.o)... and yeah you can reinstall the trials indefinitely and they update their definitions and stuff. There's also a way to get a trial of Avast Internet Security (full version of Avast); Idk if that would be better and kill off any viruses the standard Avast didn't... but you can download it from Avast.com.
Another thing you could do is open your task manager, goto the services tab, and click on services at the bottom. From there you can control what programs are allowed to run at start up, or you can even disable them permanently. I've done this to reduce the total number of programs running down to about 64 (down from 90). Only thing is some of those programs serve other programs that you occasionally use (like I disabled my internet troubleshooter, so it wasn't able to automatically repair my connection). So you might try disabling suspicious looking programs, 90% have a description of what they do and what program they're associated with, but a few system applications have no description.

After I moved, and went rounds with ISP providers I've finally got back online. I spent 4 days backing up important files, and offloading music, etc, from the hard drive. Then a complete hard dive wipe, and re-install of Windows Vista. My system is back up to speed. Now I have to re-install SWFOC, all the tools, and 3ds Max 8. I wasn't able to keep Photoshop CS3, so I'll have to become proficient with Paint.net. I'll get up to speed here shortly. Sorry if this kept me from fufilling promised works, but the viruses, and the move has been kicking my ass for a month now.
